Subject: Great audience recording, but weird processing......
So, it's the Grateful Dead at the Greek Theater in 1987 -- you'd think, "wow, this has to be good". And you'd be right. A really pleasant-sounding
...
audience source, where you can really "hear" the venue and the audience reaction to every nuance of the set. And it's a great, high-energy set that, while it doesn't look like anything special on paper, really packs quite a punch. The band is really in the sweet spot by this point in the tour.
But the problem is the way this particular version is indexed and normalized. First, it's annoying enough that the crowd noise is isolated to a buffer track between each song (e.g. not part of the song itself), but then it sounds as if each track was individually normalized. The result is that there's a noticeable jump in volume for each of these audience tracks, and then a decrease when each song starts.
This all makes for somewhat of a mess of a recording, but if you can get past this, this recording a great example of how good Grateful Dead audience sources can be. The band is really firing on all cylinders here.
